Lindsay Ash
Carrboro Commons Writer
Ann Ansley is a senior journalism and political science double major from the metropolis of Sanford, N.C. Her interest in journalism began in the newspaper class she took in high school. She loves kittens, coffee, miniature versions of things (e.g. Baby Goldfish; mini Cokes), tennis, French, and The New York Times (on occasion). She is currently busy commuting from Raleigh, taking classes, and tutoring at a local elementary school. Ann used to work at Starbucks, a job that turned her into an addict of white chocolate mochas and coffee shops in general. She can be reached at akansley@email.unc.edu
Lindsay Ash, a junior public relations and political science major, was raised in Charlotte, N.C. She enjoys anything that includes talking. Writing for the Carrboro Commons is her first experience with any newspaper, but she is currently interning with Orange County RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program. On campus Lindsay is involved with her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, and working with UNC student government. She is currently involved with Kristin Hill for Student Body President’s campaign and is a member of the Greek affairs committee. Her email is lash@email.unc.edu

Kennedy Carruthers
Carrboro Commons Writer
Colin Campbell is a junior news-ed major from Charlottesville, Va. He is in his third year writing for The Daily Tar Heel and got his first taste of community journalism working for The Chautauquan Daily in Chautauqua, N.Y., in the summer of 2006. Outside of newspapers, he can occasionally be heard on the air at WNRN radio in Charlottesville, where he has worked as a D.J. and newscaster since 2002. He can also be found in theaters around campus hanging lights or doing some other behind-the-scenes work, or organizing Gulf Coast relief work trips or other events for the group Extended Disaster Relief.
Kennedy is a senior journalism and Spanish major at UNC-Chapel. The Raleigh native has always been a avid fan of the Tar Heels, but choosing her news editorial concentration was a bit more difficult, having changed her major three times before senior year. When she is not busy finding the next big story for Carrboro Commons, Kennedy enjoys the rendezvous at Caribou with her friends, yogurt pump with hot fudge, singing in the shower, skipping and drinking old well whites at Top of the Hill. She has aspirations to work in the fashion realm by doing something not so superficial and traveling the whole globe. Kennedy can be reached at kennedy.carruthers@gmail.com.

Shera Everette is a senior journalism major from Wilson, N.C. She began her journalism adventure in 2003 as an apprentice for the Wilson Daily Times, a community newspaper. Her main journalistic interests include covering women’s sports on every level and features stories. The most exciting story that she has written to date is a sports story that recapped North Carolina State women’s basketball team triumph over Boston College during the second annual Hoops For Hope game.
After graduation, Shera plans to work as a sports writer for a newspaper in the South.

Alexandra Mansbach
Carrboro Commons Writer
Stephanie Kane is a junior in the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communications on the Public Relations Sequence and plans to achieve a certificate in business journalism and an outside concentration in history. Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, Stephanie spends her free time at Carolina involved with her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, the Carolina Women’s Center as the volunteer coordinator, and giving on-campus tours as a UNC Admissions Ambassador. Stephanie plans to pursue writing and potentially law school, and looks forward to gaining a greater understanding of and appreciation for both Carrboro and community journalism after her time with us. She can be reached at sakane@email.unc.edu.
Alexandra Mansbach is a junior journalism major from Winter Park, Fl. Though she loves North Carolina, she’s a Florida girl at heart and enjoys warm weather, long walks on the beach, boogie boarding, and building sandcastles. In her spare time, you can find her running around Chapel Hill, singing loudly in her car, or watching Law and Order re-runs on USA Network. She absolutely loves writing and hopes to one day write her own children’s books.

Allison McNeill
Carrboro Commons Writer
Allie Maupin is a junior journalism and public relations major from Indian Trail, NC. She loves traveling, buying things from the clearance rack and feeding her caffeine addiction. After cleaning out her savings backpacking in Europe, she now swipes One Cards at the Student Rec Center for minimum wage. Allie is always up for Carolina basketball and peanut butter banana sandwiches. Email her at amaupin@email.unc.edu
Allison McNeill is a junior from Pinehurst, N.C, and no – she doesn’t
play golf. Even though she’s double-majoring in public relations and
political science, she shies away from any talk about politics.
Allison is a big fan of laughing too much, chapstick, guitar solos, and
chocolate covered banana slices. She is known for going through
approximately four OneCards per semester and having the worse road rage
you will ever see. In the future, if you need to find Allison, you can
find her working as the public relations director for the Atlanta
Braves. Until then, she can be reached at mcneilla@email.unc.edu

Katie Spencer

Morgan Siem is a junior journalism major, minoring in English and Spanish. Born in Manhattan, raised in Yardley, Penn, and now beginning to feel very much at home in North Carolina. She loves reading, writing and traveling, and she hopes to make all three of those hobbies a big part of her future. She loves her job at The Original Ornament in Carr Mill Mall and hopes you’ll stop by sometime. Her e-mail address is siemm@email.unc.edu.

Katie Spencer is in her senior year of studies in Journalism and History; she is originally from Matthews, N.C., where her family still resides. Her varied interests have taken her from the highest Andean peaks of Argentina to the deepest recesses of Davis Library. Katie has a specific interest in community journalism and all things Carrboro; she also regularly contributes to local music and arts, where she brings her accordion to the swelling masses. Katie recently quelled the usual post-graduation worries by accepting a position with the Center for the Study of Religion and Society in South Bend, Ind.

Tracey Theret
Carrboro Commons Co-Editor
Leah Szarek is a senior journalism and political science double major from Wesley Chapel, N.C. For a Connecticut-born French-Canadian-Pole, she has a surprising interest in Spanish and the Latino community of North Carolina, an interest that she hopes will not be sapped by her half-completed 80-page senior honors thesis. When she is not analyzing microfilm in small public libraries across the state, she can be found editing The Hill: Chapel Hill Political Review (UNC-CH’s nonpartisan political magazine), waiting tables at Carrabba’s Italian Grill or sharing her front porch with one of Carrboro’s many tail-less black cats. She can be reached at szarek@email.unc.edu.
Tracey Theret is a senior journalism and Spanish major from Raleigh, North Carolina. She enjoys the beach, reading non-assigned books, puppies and traveling. Currently working as a hostess at Outback Steakhouse, she gave up her post as assistant city editor at the Daily Tar Heel to be a non-paid senior writer and thusly has much more free time.

Eve Greene
Carrboro Commons Photo Editor
Sean Umstead is a junior journalism major focused on electronic media. He is an intense sports fan who loves everything from curling to crew. Sean is looking forward to graduation next year and hopes to find his place in the sports world, wherever that may be.
Evelyn Greene is a junior photojournalism and English major at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is from Cameron, N.C. (usually referenced as the antique capital of the Sandhills but really it is just a small town between Fayetteville and Pinehurst). Ever since her dad gave her a camera in first grade, she is rarely without one in her hand, her bag or her car. She creates the newsletter for Presbyterian Campus Ministries and she is often seen with her fellow Flying Squirrels of Phi Sigma Pi, the National Honors Fraternity. Eve always ends up in the kitchen cooking for her friends on movie night (mostly on her own accord). Besides Chapel Hill, which of course is the best place to be a college student, anywhere in the mountains is Eve’s favorite place to be. Who doesn’t love chilly weather and trees!

Kate Searcy
Carrboro Commons Writer

Kate Searcy is a junior Journalism major from Emerald Isle, NC. She was born at Duke Hospital but soon realized the error of her ways and decided to go to school somewhere more prestigious. She enjoys poetry, long walks on the beach, and puppies. When she is not dutifully composing articles for the Commons, you cannot find her in the library, playing horseshoes, or cheering for NC State basketball. You can reach her at ksearcy@email.unc.edu.

Jock Lauterer
Faculty Adviser
Jock Lauterer grew up in Chapel Hill and then he moved to North Carolina. After graduating from UNC-CH and spending way too much time at the DTH, he helped start and run two community newspapers in the mountains of N.C. His 15 years in the trenches has produced six books, including the survival manual/field guide and text, “Community Journalism: Relentlessly Local.” In addition to teaching writing and photography, Jock instructs the Community Journalism class at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is also the director of the Carolina Community Media Project, and serves as the “fairy godfather” of the Carrboro Commons, aka, the faculty adviser. He is proud to live in “greater Carrboro.” Tell him what you think about the Carrboro Commons at jock@email.unc.edu
